Students studying economics at Carthage have many opportunities to enrich their education.
January Term
J-Term, or January Term, is a month-long period of study in January in which all academic departments at Carthage offer innovative courses on campus as well as study tours in other countries. Economics faculty teach a range of courses that explore topics not typically covered in economics electives, such as how economic concepts are portrayed in film, how automation and new technologies are changing the labor market, and how regulation affects how alcohol markets work.
Students have the opportunity to participate in full-time research through Carthage’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. Students selected to participate in SURE spend 10 weeks on campus doing research full time (40 hours per week) with a faculty mentor. Students receive a stipend, on-campus housing, a meal plan, and a research budget.
All SURE students and faculty mentors meet weekly for lunch, during which students present their progress. At the end of the program, students display their findings at a poster session for the Carthage community.
Carthage sponsors undergraduate student teams to compete in the College Fed Challenge, a competition in which students analyze economic and financial conditions and formulate a monetary policy recommendation, modeling the Federal Open Market Committee. Participating in the challenge hones students’ research, presentation, and critical thinking skills. During the challenge, students interact with staff of the Federal Reserve Bank and their peers.
Scholarships and Awards
Carthage awards two full-tuition per year School of Business and Economics Scholarships each year to incoming freshmen. These scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate ability in business and/or economics, and are renewable for four years.
Experiential Learning and The Aspire Center
Carthage has launched a comprehensive four-year career preparation program for all students. The Aspire Program™ provides students in all majors with individual career counseling, greater access to internships, and new opportunities to explore career options.
